Payhip vs Etsy for Sewing Pattern Designers: How to Choose

Compare Payhip and Etsy for selling PDF sewing patterns, including discovery, delivery limits, fees, and storefront control.

Payhip and Etsy solve different parts of selling a PDF sewing pattern. Payhip is a direct digital storefront you can send customers to; Etsy is a marketplace where shoppers can also browse and search. Your best fit depends on where buyers will come from, how you want to package files, and the full cost of each sale. This comparison uses official provider pages checked 11 October 2026. It is a decision framework, not a hands-on review or a guaranteed earnings calculation.

If you are starting from scratch, read how to sell PDF sewing patterns online first. The Payhip setup and Etsy setup guides cover the individual workflows.

The core trade-off: traffic and control

With Payhip, plan to bring shoppers through your own content, audience, or direct promotion. With Etsy, a relevant listing may be discovered inside a marketplace, but visibility is not guaranteed and you operate under Etsy’s listing rules. Neither channel removes the need for strong product files, clear photos, support, or marketing.

Ask a concrete question: “If I publish this pattern tomorrow, where will the first ten interested makers see it?” If you already teach or share projects with an audience, a direct link may be enough to test a storefront. If you want to explore marketplace discovery, Etsy may be worth testing. You can also use more than one channel if you can maintain accurate files and support on each.

What you must verifyPayment provider, current plan fees, seller settingsCurrent listing rules, fee schedule, processing rate, search visibility

These points come from Payhip’s digital-product help and Etsy’s digital-listing help. Recheck both before designing a package around a limit. A sewing pattern with multiple paper sizes may be easy to upload on one platform and require careful bundling on the other.

Compare costs without hiding extra fees

Payhip’s pricing page listed these platform plans on 11 October 2026: Free at $0/month plus 5% per transaction, Plus at $29/month plus 2%, and Pro at $99/month with no Payhip transaction fee. Payhip also states that PayPal or Stripe payment-processing fees still apply. Etsy’s fee basics listed a US$0.20 listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee, with country-dependent payment processing and possible additional services or ads.

Do not compare 5% with 6.5% and call the result a total-cost verdict. For a hypothetical $15 pattern, the platform percentage alone is $0.75 on Payhip Free and $0.98 (rounded from $0.975) on Etsy; Etsy also has a $0.20 listing charge, and both channels can have other payment-related costs. This example excludes processing, currency conversion, taxes, ads, monthly subscriptions, and any renewal or other charge. Your actual result depends on location, order details, plan, and sales volume. Use our pricing worksheet method with the current fee pages.

Match the platform to the product package

List every promised file before choosing. A pattern with instructions, A4, US Letter, projector, and large-format files may fit the five-file count exactly on Etsy, leaving no room for a separate read-me unless you reorganize. The same package might be simpler on Payhip, but file count alone does not decide whether your customers can find or use the product. A ZIP is an option only if customers can understand and open it.

If you need different bundles or prices, verify the product-options workflow. Payhip documents variations in its digital-product settings, while Etsy’s current help says variations are unavailable for digital items. Avoid assuming a seller interface works a certain way from a generic tutorial; inspect the current platform documentation.

A decision you can test

  • Choose Payhip to investigate first if you already have a clear way to send people to a direct product page and value flexible file packaging. Check payment availability and total fees for your location.
  • Choose Etsy to investigate first if marketplace discovery is part of your plan and your files fit its current rules. Budget for listing, transaction, processing, and any optional advertising charges.
  • Consider both only if you can keep descriptions, file versions, customer support, and prices accurate on both channels.

Publish one well-prepared pattern, record where visitors come from and which questions they ask, then reassess. A low first-week sale count is not enough evidence to crown or reject a platform. The practical next step is to follow the Payhip workflow or Etsy workflow and test the complete download experience before promotion.
